A Win by the Unstoppable Abortion Movement: Mexico Decriminalized
Abortion!

The Supreme Court of Mexico declared that the federal penal code that criminalizes abortion is unconstitutional. Safe abortions must now be available in the public health system in all federal health institutions across the country.

We stand with the #UnstoppableMovement in Mexico in celebration of this incredible milestone. Let us take energy from this win to continue fighting for the decriminalization of abortion and access to safe & legal abortion care in our contexts and around the world.

About the September 28 Campaign

International Safe Abortion Day is the global day of action to demand access to safe and legal abortions everywhere and for all women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals. It has its origin in Latin America and the Caribbean where women’s groups have been mobilizing around September 28 since the 1990s to demand their governments to decriminalize abortion, to provide access to safe and affordable abortion services and to end stigma and discrimination towards women who choose to have an abortion.

Recent years have seen a growing number  of activities in countries

across all global regions. National and world leaders have begun to make statements in support of the day, and a growing number of media outlets report national and international events and write articles on the theme.

September 28 has been a regional campaign for the decriminalization of abortion in Latin America and the Caribbean for over twenty years before being taken on by SRHR activists all over the world in 2011. The campaign was formerly known as the Global Day of Action for Access to Safe and Legal Abortion.
