This September 28, International Safe Abortion Day (ISAD), abortion activists and broader sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and justice advocates will come together to show strength in solidarity of the unstoppable abortion movement in fighting and defending accessible, safe, legal and stigma-free abortion care for all.
Abortion is essential, life-saving sexual and reproductive healthcare, a fundamental human right, and central to reproductive freedom and justice. It is also a cornerstone of gender equality and a critical component in achieving sustainable development.
Yet today, we are witnessing a coordinated backlash against abortion rights, reproductive justice, and broader human rights movements—including LGBTQI and feminist movements. This attack is not confined to one country or region. It is global, strategic, and well-funded.
Anti-rights actors have built transnational networks that thrive on fear-mongering, disinformation, censorship, and withdrawal of vital funding. Human rights defenders and healthcare providers are increasingly targeted, facing surveillance, harassment, criminalization, and even violence, for standing up for human rights and delivering essential, life-saving healthcare. These attacks are deliberate efforts to intimidate, silence, and dismantle the movements advancing reproductive freedom and justice.
Those who bear the brunt of these attacks are the most marginalized—women, young people, gender-diverse individuals, Indigenous communities, people with disabilities, those living in poverty, and people in crisis and conflict settings. In many countries, especially where abortion is heavily restricted or totally banned, these communities are forced to navigate dangerous and dehumanizing systems just to access basic healthcare. However, restrictive policies, criminalization, and total abortion bans do not stop abortions, they only make them unsafe, deepening inequality and putting lives at risk. The impact is devastating, and it is always the most vulnerable who are left to suffer the consequences.
With 2025 already halfway behind us and critical months ahead, we have a vital opportunity to strengthen our movements, amplify our demands, and push for concrete, transformative action to advance reproductive freedom and justice, through intersectional, intergenerational, and cross-movement solidarity.
Be a September 28 Campaign Partner Now!
We call upon abortion activists and social justice movements worldwide to join the global dialogues and take part in the September 28 Campaign. The dialogues provide a platform for activists and social justice movements to address emerging and pressing issues surrounding safe abortion and to strategize the ways forward with partner organizations.
Through the dialogues, you will be engaged in crafting a Call to Action, developing demands, and identifying key priority areas. Together, these collective efforts will lay the foundation for our global campaign mobilization and amplification on September 28.
Honoring our history: September 28, as a day of action for safe abortion rights, originates in Latin America, where feminist reproductive justice groups have mobilized around this date for the last two decades to demand legal, safe, and free abortion access.
