Jandira Magdalena dos Santos Cruz (27 years old) and Elisângela Barbosa (32 years old) have died because they have chosen to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. In most developed countries, Jandira and Elisângela would have access to a safe abortion, performed by skilled professionals in public health facilities and would be able to exercise to make choices in their reproductive lives and to receive the necessary support to exercise this citizenship right. But in Brazil, they had to resort to clandestinity and undergo unsafe procedure performed in totally inappropriate conditions.

Jandira is missing since August 26, 2014 and Elisângela’s body was found on September 22. These tragedies gained visibility in the police sections of printed, TV and digital media, even when they constitute, in fact, a regrettable page in the records of women’s reproductive health conditions in Brazil. The Jandira and Elisêngela cases are human rights violations, in a national context that witnesses the expanding denial the reproductive rights of women who daily resort to unsafe and illegal abortion as the only possible way to exercise the right to choose.
We therefore call for the legalization of abortion in Brazil and count on your support!
