Kyetume CBHC

Event: Community matching and public rally on the Global day of action of 28th Sept 2012

Location: Katosi Trading center, Mukono District, Uganda

Most abortion related complications are easily treated if care is received on time. However, evidence suggests that one in five women who require treatment for complications of unsafe abortions never receive such care.  Among those who receive treatment, many experience delay in obtaining it, exacerbating their conditions.

Kyetume community Based Health care Programme started to implement Emergency post abortion project in 2011 in Mukono District, Uganda with support from IPPF/SAAF with an aim of  reducing the unsafe abortion  problem in Uganda where abortions occur at the  rate of 54 per 1000 women aged 15-49, and occur at a rate of one in five pregnancies. Like any other organizations, Kyetume CBHC will commemorate the international campaign for women’s rights to safe abortion the first time in History held on 28th September every year.

During the event, we have mobilized 600 women and men who will match through the roads of Katosi and surrounding villages with printed banners lifted up. Women will be given time to share their options regarding access to emergency post abortion care services in their communities during the rally. Awareness on PAC will be raised during the rally enable women to seek safe abortion services from qualified medical practitioners.

This will also be an avenue for the women to advocate for their issues which came up in one of the advocacy workshops held with different stakeholders like policy makers, local government and Religious leaders.  Issues such as ; Increase equipments  for PAC  and family planning services in lower level health centres; inclusion of PAC activities in the local government development plans and advocate for un restricted safe abortion to those who need it for protection of women’  health and raising awareness on post abortion  care family planning services .
